Adam Aaronson has been at the heart of British studio glass for more than 25 years, initially as the driving force behind London’s first ever gallery dedicated to studio glass, and subsequently as a recognized glass artist in his own right.

Adam successfully combines both aspects of his passion for glass at his London base – a studio where he makes his own work with a team of skilled craftspeople, as well as a gallery promoting new glass talent alongside the work of established artists. He also works tirelessly to support the glass community in the UK as a whole, including a close involvement in recent months with the campaign to save from closure the unique glass collections of a museum in central England, the award winning Broadfield House Glass Museum.

This combination of artist and gallerist is somewhat unusual in the world of glass but it is a testament to the all-encompassing nature of Adam’s love of glass, which is evident in his various bodies of work and support for other glass artists. Indeed, aside from making his own work, Adam sets aside a certain amount of studio time to work collaboratively with both established and emerging artists to facilitate the development of their work.

Adam’s latest series, Strata, is an extension of his long-held fascination with layers. It is a technically challenging and mature body of work, which examines and interprets elements that are normally hidden below the surface of the natural and urban landscape.

“I’ve often noticed, when a building is being demolished, you can see layers of wallpaper and paintwork, overlapping as they peel away. I see this as an allegory for looking beneath the surface – often things are not quite as they seem and it can be a mistake to judge by appearances.”

Each complex piece is built up in layers of molten glass, sometimes with the incorporation of silver or gold leaf, or with coloured canes or powders encapsulated and suspended between each layer. After annealing, the piece is intensively cold worked using various finishing techniques to reveal a highly polished surface, occasionally contrasted with a more opaque finish.

This fascination with layers has also been explored in some of Adam’s other recent bodies of work, Landscape and Stone.

“With my Landscapes, I build up the colour and texture in layer upon layer on the surface of the form using silver leaf and varying sizes of glass powders and frits. With my Stone series, I have a layer of colour on the inside and layers of clear frosted glass on the outside, so that there is a feeling of a glass skin, which mirrors the layered structure of real skin.”

Adam’s studio is based in the bustling Earl’s Court district of West London.  It is open to the public all year round and offers visitors the chance to enjoy a fascinating insight into the skilled process of glass making.

His work has been exhibited all over the world and can be found in numerous private collections from royalty to rock stars and politicians – for example, Tony Blair presented Hilary Clinton with a piece as a gift a few years ago. Adam’s  work is also regularly shown at top art fairs in the USA and the UK. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) and a member of The Society of Designer Craftsmen, The Contemporary Glass Society, The Glass Circle and The Glass Association.
