05 June 2008 AACG Awards Announced. AACG President Mickey Mandel has announced the organization's 2008 awards, which will be presented at SOFA Chicago on November 8.

The AACG Award, given annually to an organization for its contributions to the contemporary glass movement, will be presented to the Museum of Glass, Tacoma, WA. In addition to receiving an unrestricted grant from AACG, the Museum will be invited to present a lecture on its programs at SOFA Chicago.

AACG Honors awards are presented to individuals of outstanding accomplishment in the field of contemporary glass art. Honorees may be artists, collectors, curators, critics, teachers, authors, gallery owners and directors, and others whose contributions have been significant and important in the field. The awardees in 2008 are:

  • Simona and Jerome Chazen, collectors and benefactors.
  • Bonnie Marx and Ken Saunders, owners/directors, Marx-Saunders Gallery.

Mark Zirpel named to Chihuly Chair. The University of Washington has announced the appointment of mixed-media and glass artist Mark Zirpel as Assistant Professor and first holder of the Dale Chihuly Endowed Chair in Glass. Zirpel received a BFA in drawing and printmaking from the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, and an MFA in printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute. He has been a resident at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, and has held a 2004 CGCA Fellowship at WheatonArts and a Hauberg Fellowship at Pilchuck..

 

Pilchuck Selects Interim Director: Pilchuck Glass School has announced the selection of Ralph Bufano as its interim executive director, succeeding Patricia Watkinson, who is retiring. Bufano is a 38-year veteran of museum and arts management. He has been a program director at Corning Glass Center and Museum, director/curator of the Paine Art Center and Arboretum in Oshkosh WI, vice president of the EAA Aviation Foundation, president of the Kansas City Museum, executive director of the Ward Foundation Museum, and director of the Museum of Flight in Seattle. He studied fine arts at the University of Minnesota and attended the Institute in Arts Administration at Harvard.

New Permanent Installation to be at Museum of Glass. Martin Blank will take up an extended Visiting Artist residency at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma to create Fluent Steps, a new permanent installation that will span the entire length of the 210-foot-long Main Plaza reflecting pool, and will stand up to 15' high. Blank and his team will fabricate the elements for Fluent Steps in the Museum Hot Shop on scheduled dates between now and June 24. Those not able to be present may watch the work on the live Hot Shop video feed.
